Johnny Majors dies at age 85: Legendary Tennessee and Pitt football coach leaves lasting impact – CBS Sports

Johnny Majors, one of faculty football’s perfect coaches and a member of the College Soccer Corridor of Reputation, has died at age 85. His accomplice of 61 years, Mary Lynn, announced Majors’ loss of life in an announcement to WNML.

Majors was in a rare class as an elite program-building coach at three separate groups: Iowa Affirm, Pitt and his alma mater, Tennessee. He coached the Cyclones from 19680-72, leading the program to its first bowl game in history, a loss to LSU within the 1971 Sun Bowl. 

“Johnny Majors is one of college football‘s all-time perfect coaches,” Iowa Affirm coach Matt Campbell acknowledged in an announcement. “Johnny came back each and each yr and it was a pleasure for our avid gamers to derive to clutch him and realize his legacy at Iowa Affirm. He was one of many perfect figures in Iowa Affirm football history.”

Majors then coached the Panthers from 1973-76, winning a national title in his last season with a 12-0 document. Working back Tony Dorsett gained the Heisman Trophy that season as effectively. 

A two-time SEC Participant of the Yr and All-American as a halfback for Tennessee within the 1950s, Majors achieved 2nd in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1956, shedding to Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung. 

He returned to his alma mater as its head coach in 1977, leading the Volunteers until 1992. Majors gained three SEC championships and 7 bowl games with Tennessee. A avenue was later named after him on UT’s campus: Johnny Majors Force. 

Majors was inducted into the College Soccer Corridor of Reputation in some unspecified time in the future of his bustle with the Vols in 1987. Following his profession at Tennessee, Majors temporarily returned to educate at Pitt from 1993-96. In all, Majors ended his profession with 185 wins, at the 2nd the 29th-most within the history of the sport.
